Pair your iPad or iPhone

Updated October 1, 2026

To pair, open Treadle on the Mac and on your iPad or iPhone. The Mac shows a six-digit code; type it on the device, and the two connect over your Wi-Fi. You can revoke a device later from the Mac's Devices tab whenever you want.

Pairing in three steps: a six-digit code appears on the Mac, you type it on the device, and the two connect.

Before you start

  • Install the Mac app first. See Install Treadle.
  • Put the Mac and the iPad or iPhone on the same Wi-Fi or network.
  • Install the Treadle app on the iPad or iPhone.

Pair the device

  1. On the Mac, open the menu-bar popover and go to Devices (or use the pairing step in the first-run wizard).
  2. Choose Add a device. The Mac shows a six-digit code.
  3. On the iPad or iPhone, open Treadle and type the six-digit code.

The iPad or iPhone finds the Mac automatically over the local network, so you do not type an address. If it cannot find the Mac, see The iPad or iPhone can't find my Mac.

Revoke a device

Open the Mac's Devices window and remove the device you no longer want. Its key stops working right away. The device can pair again later with a fresh code.

How many devices

A licensed Mac pairs unlimited iPads and iPhones. On the free plan you can pair one device at a time — unlock the Mac to add more. A licence covers one Mac. See What's free, what's paid.

Once paired, learn the words Treadle uses and build your first deck.

Questions & answers

How many devices can I pair?
On the paid licence, as many iPads and iPhones as you like. The licence lives on the Mac, so the devices paired to it are unlimited.
How do I remove a device?
Open the Devices tab in the Mac app and revoke it. The device stops connecting immediately.
